Hi all,
Bitter & Twisted is always a highlight of the HUB calendar and I'm sure we're all looking forward to it again this year!
To gain free entry as a HUB representative to Bitter and Twisted 2023, please keep in mind these requirements:
1. Club fees are paid by 30th September (details below)
2. Provide one full 19L keg of drinkable beer and;
3. Commit to volunteering: 2 x 1-hour sessions on Saturday and one on Sunday if you're coming on Sunday too.
In order to coordinate who's bringing what beer and who's covering which sessions this year we've created a Google form which you can access at the link below. If you're planning to attend then you need to complete the form by 30th September (since we need to register details of people and beers with the organisers)

This Month's feature is the AGM and a Style Tasting: Stouts
A few members of the committee will be stepping down from their roles at the end of this financial year, so there will be some opportunities to join the Committee. It is a great way to get involved in the club.
We will also be discussing our Brew Challenge that will be held at the July Meeting.

Meeting is on Thursday 18th of May 2023 This month we will have a tour around the Modus facility and sample their food and beverage. We should be able to have a chat with one of the brewers there also. Please note that they have requested that we do not bring our own homebrew into the venue.

In Brew Challenge
“Harvest” beers have a tradition of utilising fruits or vegetables, usually gathered in late summer / autumn and using these in a base beer. There are several categories in BJCP style guidelines that these could fall under, notably but not limited to:
29A – Fruit Beer 29B – Fruit and Spice Beer 29C – Specialty Fruit Beer 30A – Spice, Herb or Vegetable Beer 30B – Autumn Seasonal Beer 34 – Specialty Beer For the Mini Comp the beers will not be judged against a ‘style’ – this is a guide to what categories a beer like this might fall into.

The club is going to be running a BJCP Judging program. We are anticipating the tasting exam will be held in approx October this year. Alongside the tasting exam there is an online written exam too. There is extensive training required leading up to the tasting exam (approx 12 tasting sessions with sensory training and test exams). The Club is organizing a brewery tour on the 4th of March 2023. We will be attending breweries in the Newcastle area. More details will be provided shortly. Please register your interest by commenting below. EDIT 22/2/23: Proposed schedule is as follows: 12 noon to 6pm First Venue: Shout Brewing (12pm - 2pm) we have a booking for 14 people. Food is available should people wish to purchase. Uber in groups to Good FolkBrewing Co. (2pm - 4pm) where the club will purchase some pizzas to help see us through the rest of the afternoon. Walk / Uber to Method Brewing (4pm - 6pm) Uber Reimbursements - The club will reimburse members traveling from Shout Brewing to Good Folk Brewing Co., or Good Folk Brewing Co. to Method Brewing. If members please email a copy of their Uber travel receipt to hunterunitedbrewers@gmail.com with the subject "Uber Brewery Tour Receipt" along with their bank details, they will be reimbursed within a week. Please don't send receipts via Facebook Messenger or any other way. Please try and fill Ubers between venues. Please note that travel arrangements to and from the Uber Brewery Tour will not be reimbursed. If you are unable to join in for the whole day, feel free to jump in/out as needed. It would be helpful to let us know if you are unable to join for the whole day to assist with numbers. The schedule above is a guide only, but we will try to stick to it. A final word: Have fun! Be respectful to the venues and remember that we are on display to the public as a homebrew club. Don’t embarrass us or yourselves! ;-) EDIT 3/3/23: Remember, if you have your HUB club shirt make sure you wear it so you can be part of the "cool club". ;-) See you all tomorrow!

If you think you might be able to help steward or judge, you can sign up at the website. Entries close 31st August Bitter N Twisted (5th - 6th November) Paid members get free access Bring a keg of your beer to serve to the public (need RSA to serve) You Be the Judge (home brew blind tasting for the public). October meeting, bring samples (750ml+) to the meeting and make sure you have at least 6L in reserve for BnT in case you are a winner. Club gives $50 towards the cost of your RSA (one only - initial cost only, not renewals). TAFEs were doing free renewals for a while. Information about free refresher courses is available here. UBER pub crawl - coming soon after the NSW State Comp. Rough idea is that HUB club members visit new local breweries in and around Newcastle, sharing Ubers between them. Keep UBER receipts and the club will reimburse you for the cost. There will be a rough itinerary made available so people can jump in/out of the day if they need to.
